Teens Workshop: Character Drawing with Kieran Jack

Comic books and graphic novels are taking the world by storm, allowing artists to express themselves through illustrated narratives. This workshop is for students who show an interest in drawing pop culture characters and are ready to advance their skills and gain confidence in developing their own characters and narrative.

Our tutor, Kieran Jack, is a prolific comic book creator and graphic artist with a passion for teaching young people creative skills in a fun and supportive environment.

Workshop Outline
Activity 1

Warm up to build confidence; students learn how to draw expressive figures.

Activity 2

Explore how to draw facial expressions.

Activity 3

Introduction to colour and shape theory. Students begin to create their own character.

Activity 4

Participants will illustrate a character to use in their comic strip.
Kieran will then talk a little bit about Comic Page layouts e.g.; ‘camera shots’, speech/thought bubbles and narration boxes.

Activity 5

Participants draw their own Comic Strip using their new skills.

Meet the Artist: Kieran Jack

Kieran is a prolific comic book creator who has been working in the cartoonist and comic book industry for the last ten years. He created and runs Halftone Productions, an independent production house that publishes Comic Books, Graphic Novels and Podcasts distributed all around the world. Kieran is also passionate about teaching creative skills to young artists to help them develop their own artistic voice. He is an experienced tutor and provides fun and exciting workshops which help students to develop fundamental artistic skills without them even realising it.
